This past weekend 6 Pirate wrestlers traveled to Wilmington HS with hopes of a top 4 finish and a state tournament berth.
Three Pirate wrestlers were alternates heading into the tournament on Friday afternoon and hoped to have their named called back to weigh-ins to replace a wrestler who was unable to compete. However, that announcement never came for Hayden Caskey, Tyler Smith, or Mason Mills . All three saw their season end before wrestle even began Friday evening. Congratulations to sophomores Caskey (26 wins, 13 losses) and Smith (28 wins, 16 losses), as well as junior Mills (16 wins, 10 losses) on outstanding seasons. All three will look to improve on this seasons’ successes next year.
Juniors Jacob Philbeck (106lbs.) and Tyler Durham (285lbs.) were unable to extend their seasons to the state tournament and fell into the consolation brackets on Friday evening before being eliminated from competition Saturday afternoon. Jacob was 1-2 on the weekend with a pin to finish his junior campaign with 27 wins and 17 losses. Tyler was 2-2 at Districts with 2 pins and finishes with 21 wins and 19 losses.
Tyrone Keeton (132lbs.) wrestled tough all weekend and battled through the consolation brackets Saturday afternoon to a 3rd place finish! Tyrone becomes West Carrollton’s first state qualifier since 2009 and will compete next weekend at the Schottenstein Center on the campus of Ohio State University. Wrestling starts Thursday afternoon and concludes Saturday evening. For updates throughout the tournament, follow @WC_Coach_Treon on twitter or add WestCarrollton PirateWrestling on Facebook.
